The obvious difficulty in facing the unknown, is that it provokes challenging emotions like anxiety, fear, anger, grief, or sorrow. So what's the answer?

If you are resistant to change, you are holding onto something old that correlates with pain.

In Hindu traditions, they define this through a concept called Samskara, essentially action and experience that is often due to unprocessed past actions or undigested emotions in the body and mind.

This problem is not new to us. But what exacerbates this resistance? Avoidance.

Taking wisdom from a different era and applying what can work into a modern context, is a theme I'm calling Internal Opposition.

Understand Your Fear of Change Through Building Skills for Shifting Internal Opposition.

One part of us fights for safety, security, or comfort, and it avoids facing the pain and suffering of the past. This then relates to avoidance of changing parts of your life in the future, as it could resemble this challenge from your past, or cause further dysregulation.

In other words, fear and resistance to change keeps you stuck on purpose. Can you reflect on what that purpose is?

We can mediate the internal opposition by processing and healing the undigested pain form the past by being present with it.

Acknowledge the Behaviour Patterns, Narratives, and Perceptions That Have Been Changed by Locating This Samskara

Creating Awareness of Your Internal Opposition is Already a Win.

What used to work when it comes to avoidance or complacency will eventually be recognized as an old path that no longer serves you.

Yes, integrate that there is a chance you feel more fear or discomfort by doing this work, but that probably means you are doing it right.

Tools to Use For Locating and Acknowledging Resistances

  1. Create Clear Values With Change: You are unlikely to succeed with facing the fear or unknown without a powerful connection to what you are making the change for. Get clear on the benefits, behaviour systems, and emotional core values associated with doing things differently.

  2. Practice Locating Oppositional Parts or Narratives: Through externalizing narratives with verbalizing it with someone you trust, journaling, or psychotherapy, you will begin to notice what does not fit with your developing approaches to life. You will need to continue to monitor if other parts and old narratives come forward, and how to navigate the various resistances.

  3. Consistency: This is a practice. It isn't going to be completely linear such as now I've faced my resistances I'm free forever! Evolve, grow, keep consistent with your deeper sense of self, values, and emotional needs.

The good news? Whatever technique you choose can work, what's more important is THAT you choose a method that works for you and find consistency.
